Surroundings

There is much to do in the surrounding area of 't Wapen van Marion! Walking and cycling through the beautiful surroundings of Voorne and visiting the fortified towns is a must when staying at the hotel.

The fortified towns of Brielle and Hellevoetsluis have a set of special characteristics and an extraordinary history. The historic fortified town of Brielle (formerly Den Briel) is best known for its capture by the Sea Beggars on 1 April 1572, a fact that is still celebrated enthusiastically at the Brielle April Fools' Day! Hellevoetsluis is not just a fortified town, but also the former harbour of the Dutch war fleet with names like De Ruyter, Tromp and Piet Heyn.

The Voorne beaches stretch across an expanse of 15 kilometres between the Haringvliet and the New Waterway. The Oostvoorne beach offers peace and space and is located about 2 kilometres from our hotel. New dunes are developing there, and there is a natural beach with lots of vegetation. The Oostvoorne lake is about 1 kilometre removed from our hotel. A shallow part has been enclosed, making it particularly suitable for small children. The Rockanje beach is located about 5 kilometres from the hotel and is completely focused on seaside visitors. There are multiple cafés on the beach.

The Mildenburg estate is an old beech forest that represents the transition to an inner dune forest. A high dune offers a view of the Green Beach and the Oostvoorne lake. The Green Beach, an old beach hook with a lagoon, valleys and thickets is a nature recovery project near the Oostvoorne lake. The Overbosch is located on the south side of Oostvoorne and is a beautiful, small forest.

The Voorne dune area is a highly varied scenic area with forests, dune valleys, thickets and dry dune slopes.
In contrast with the dune areas in the north of Holland, where the dunes are several thousand years old, Voorne has relatively young dunes. The oldest are about 800 years old, but even now new dunes are being formed on the beach. Thanks to this young age the dune sand is rich in calcium.

The Oostvoorne lake has a size of over 250 hectares and allows you to to practice water sports. There is an injunction forbidding the use motorboats on the lake. The extremely clear water and the lack of a current make the lake particularly suitable for diving. For this reason it is also a well-known place for fly-fishing in the Netherlands. Between the fortified town of Brielle and the Rotterdam port area you will find the Brielle lake. The water is the centre of the recreation area, 750 hectares in size and about 10 kilometres long. Canoeing, water skiing and pedaloing are among the many possibilities. The Brielle lake, with its islands and shores lined by trees and bushes, is a beautiful, sheltered fishing water ideal for anglers.
